In the name of the essence of our Existence - LOVE
In many parts of the world the merry sounds of jingle bells could still be heard. The party hadn’t stopped. Laughter and celebration was still setting the atmosphere; and why not, one would wonder. Afterall, it was Boxing Day and one had every reason to be euphoric.
But elsewhere the mood was vastly contrasting to put it mildly. Mourns, painful screams, and cries sounded a hundred decibels higher than the jingle bells and laughter. The atmosphere was simply melancholic and panic filled. Disaster had struck in the name of ‘The Tsunami’.
I hear people talk about how ruthless nature has been, to have such a disaster at such a joyous time. The once ‘merciful’ God had suddenly become ‘unfair’. I say we should stop trying to find someone else to put the blame on. In fact, I believe each and every one of us fortunate souls are to take part of the blame.
I recently read a book. It’s called ‘Conversations with God’. In it the author has this inquisitive and straightforward ‘talk’ with God in which God explained to him why Hitler actually ended up going to heaven as opposed to hell which most of us in the right state of mind would have probably thought so. I mean if a guy who killed millions for the incorrigible craving for power could go to heaven, it would not make any sense whatsoever, right? Well, this is what God said. He said each of us has a consciousness which depicts what we feel is right and wrong. It is through this consciousness where events and experiences in our personal lives are created. When many of this similar consciousness come together it forms what we call a group consciousness. It is what the mass of people feel the same way about what is right and wrong about whatever is going on in the world. He goes further to say that primarily the group consciousness we humans have advocates separation and differences. We believe so strongly in ‘survival of the fittest’ where the winner takes all and the loser is doomed. But the question is, what do we base the win on? In fact, it is this very belief and mentality among us that actually encouraged Hitler’s activites in the Jewish Holocaust. He was not the sole cause for it. We allowed him to do it; the Germans wanted to stamp their superiority over the Jews, whom they labeled as lower class, and took to whatever Hitler commanded. The rest of the world simply watched what was happening. Nobody ever tried stopping what was going on. The Reason is simple. There was a group consciousness revolving around separation(Survival of the fittest) and power. There was no group consciousness for unity and helping the weak. The strong simply wanted to get stronger, at the expense of the weak. Hence, when we look at it this way, Hitler was just a tool for us to achieve what we felt was right for the world. So can we fault him? Why should he not go to heaven when he actually shared the common understanding of everyone else? The truth is, each and everyone who blamed, ridiculed and cursed him for what he did unknowingly justified his actions.
Similarly, in the case of this tsunami tragedy, I feel we are paying for the lack of love and compassion in the world. Somehow I reckon a lot of us are hypocritic in our expression of love and care to people and events which happen every moment around us. Let me explain why. Say if I were to ask, how many of you feel that we should be united and help one another so as to sustain love in this world? I can safely put my neck out and say each and every soul would stand up with vigour and pride. But is this really what is happening? We should take a conscious look at what we are doing; yes, each and every one of us. How many times do we read in the papers; working adults abandoning aged and helpless parents, children being abused and taken advantage of in the most brutal and gruesome way. Statistics show an alarming increase in parents selling their children to prostitution or slavery just so they can get themselves out of financial difficulty. Yet when questioned some of them can say “ We do not want to do this but we have no choice. We have to live.” Let me get something straight here. Isn’t that not the blatant sacrifice of innocence and love for greed and cruelty? Even if they were to get all the money in the world and live the most luxurious life, deep down inside they know it has all been at the expense of their loved one. For me, there is nothing more demeaning and disgraceful than that. It is through actions like these that makes the devil rub his hands in delight. For those who are not directly involved, for those who sit at the back and read about all these things happening around the world, we are just shaking our head because we sympathise with the plight of the children. But the question is, Are we effectively doing anything to help the situation? Imagine this, an innocent child being sold to despicable hands against it’s will is reaching out to you. Its eyes filled with tears yet it knows it cannot do anything about it. It’s pleading you, “Please help me”. And what are most of us doing. We just say “I really feel for you but I’m sorry I cannot do anything to help you.” And there goes another child into demise. The truth is this. The essense of life in this world is love. Genuine love. If we are going to sustain this everyone has to stand up and do something about it. The painful reality is it took such a tragedy for us ignorant beings to realize that.
Only after the tsunami struck did we act, in true human spirit. From canceling the fireworks during the New year as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives to heaps of volunteers going down to help sort things out and provide support emotionally, mentally and physically to victims. Even celebrities, themselves often materialism personified went forth to add financial support to the ease the plight of the people affected. Various military organizations played their part in relief efforts. Prayers were said throughout the world in masses, really the epitome of unity. People held candles and prayed as one, regardless of religion and language. Suddenly it struck me as I was saying my own silent prayer that the whole tsunami incident seems like a wake up call from above.
Just as we think the world is so full of love at last, several worrying question marks arise. How long is this unconditional love and support going to be around considering the fact that materialism continues to drives people nowadays? How long is it going to be before we forget about whatever that we learnt from the tragedy and start our hypocritic nonsense again? Afterall, that was certainly the case after the infamous September 11 attacks. Above all, the most worrying thing is, Are we going to need another such painful tragedy to wake our ideas up and act the way we should?
It is so easy to get carried away by the lure of short term gains, again often fuelled by materialism, that people tend to lose control of their true consciousness. It is what happened in the case of Hitler. I think it’s ultimately down to each individual and his consciousness. If you are going to change something u feel is detrimental to the love around the world u should stand your ground and make a stand. Only then would people have similar consciousness and join you. This would create a powerful group consciousness which is all about love and unity. That is everlasting. That is sustaining. That is true. That is divine. Let’s not create another Hitler, let’s save another child from suffering it is not deserving of, and no we do not want another tragedy as a reminder for the need and giving of love for every individual and by every individual. Wouldn’t it be so much nicer if we hear only the jingle bells all the time?
