love actually

"People say that time is a great healer. Which people? What are they talking about? I think some feelings you experience in your life are written in indelible ink and the best you can hope for is that they fade a little over the years."

Looking back at the 8 years that have gone by I'm torn between feeling angry, hurt and a deep sense of loss. Perhaps that is why as I sat alone today reflecting on you and me, I chose to feel acceptance. It must have been the bench at the park ..where we last sat together..your hands in mine and my head on your shoulders...the dim lights, the gentle breeze, the rustling of leaves and the warmth of your skin..all it took was a moment..a moment of letting myself wander down a forbidden track and there u were..if only i'd known that was to be the last time we would be part of each other's lives..

time has passed since then...it doesn't hurt as much as it did yday and it won't hurt as much tmr...but the memories will always be there...as much as i wish you'd done things differently, as much as i feel betrayed, as much as i question the absurdity of it all, i realised today why you decided to call it quits.. it was that last conversation we had, wasn't it? all of a sudden it became crystal clear to me how the end had begun..

relationships end leaving behind memories that can't be erased..i hate this time of the year.. cos it makes me think about you..like an unwilling prisoner dragged to meet his certain death..the more i try to refrain from thinking of the past the more i end up doing so..it just occured to me that 02/02/02 was my first vday celebration..we weren't together, we weren't dating and it was 12 days in advance but everything that had to be said was said in every glance, every smile, every action...the cheap carnations, the watery ice cream, the sticky cotton candy, the cheap lunch at BK, a whole day of walking around at the funfair, getting lost, glowing iin your praises, flattery and flirting, being teased by friends and my first vday present, an ugly teddy bear that i adored to bits...a day like that rarely if never comes in a person's life..a day that is to be remembered for its million imperfections..imperfections that like missing pieces in a jigsaw puzzle fit together to create a work of perfection...

"When you've felt that much about a man and he disappears from your life, after a while you start to think it was just some foolish illusion on your part and that the other person walked clean away, no scar tissue. But maybe the other person felt the same."

The people we call friends...

Who is this person we call a friend? I believe that in this time and age the word friend is used far too loosely. At first when we call someone a friend it's often someone we are able to say a cordial hi and bye to; someone you can exchange a few pleasantries and amicable small talk. It's only with the course of time that you can truly get to know someone for who he/she is. It's only over many days and months that you open up to someone, confide and build rapport and trust. This i believe is what marks a true friendship from a mere acquaintance. Simply put a bond of sorts needs to be in place to make a friendship what it is.

So do we selflessly give our time, efforts and love to a friend regardless of the fact that the other person might always be on the receiving end? No. There is a marked difference between a selfless kind hearted act and just being made use of by someone. For example, let's say Person A meets Person B and has formed an acquaintance of sorts. If A chooses to help B through his/her difficulties simply cos he/she wants to then I might consider that selfless. To me that's an act of compassion cos A is in no position to expect anything in return from B in light of how theirs is not really a friendship.

Now things change if A and B get to know each other over some weeks and months to form a deeper bond. A might find himself/herself still helping B and perhaps in a greater number of issues that requires more time and effort. A might also need to work harder in maintaining the friendship due to whatever circumstances B might find himself/herself. Now if A keeps giving and B does nothing or does minimal in return do we say A is selfless or simply being foolish and made use of? In my younger days I would say A is selfless but with age and many bitter experiences that comes with it I would say A is being made use of.

Let me clarify. When I say there needs to be a give and take policy in every friendship I'm not saying one has to be calculative and keep note of who sends more messages or who makes more calls or who initiates meetings more often. The degree as to who gives more and who takes more can differ between individuals due to whatever circumstances they find themselves in. What is important is that both individuals give at times on their own initiative and give when the other person really needs the help and support of a friend. Let's go back to A and B.

A might find himself/herself giving more simply cos he/she is better able to make time and put in effort. That would be acceptable if B is able to be there for A from time to time on his/her own initiative. If B can standby A who has sacrificed to much for him/her when A needs him/her then the fact that A is giving more fades away into oblivion.

What do I mean by being there for someone? If I see a friend is upset, there are 2 different courses of action that I can take. If by friend I mean an acquaintance I can message to ask how he/she is doing and make sure he/she knows that I am there to render support and a helping hand. If by friend I mean someone whom I have come to see as someone special and important in my life then I would go to greater lengths to make sure I help this friend of mine. This is not because I'm being selfish and only care more about the people I know better but simply cos when you know someone better your ability to understand him/her and your options to help the person increases. Furthermore, a friend might allow you to step into his/her personal zone unlike an acquaintance and this might facilitate you lending a greater helping hand with regards to his/her personal life.

Sometimes you think that you need to give in more to a friend who seems to be so busy.; you go out of your way to message, call and reschedule your weekly plans just to make time for him/her. You try and understand that he/she has limited time to spare so if late night calls at the expense of your sleep is what is needed to keep the friendship going then you sacrifice your sleep and make the calls. If the person can only meet on a particular day of a week and it clashes with all your other plans you cancel or push your plans to another day; all cos you want to be able to give this friend your time. But after awhile it dawns on you...that your friend is not the only one who is busy...so are YOU...

It's a daunting task to manage your time between all your responsibilities and the people you love. Having been so busy of late I've come to see and understand that. But it can be done. Work, tuition, dance rehearsals apart I find that I've time for all the people I love simply cos I make the time. I'm not professing to doing alot for each of these special people but I can safely say this; at least I do something to the best of my abilities for them. If not alot at least a message to ask them how they are and to let them know I'm thinking of them. It's amazing how technology can really help one keep in touch with people amidst busy schedules yet people fail to use it enough. You can whip your phone out while rushing from one appointment to another to call and console a friend., you can simultaneously lend a listening ear to a few friends at one go over msn. In the worst scenario you can always meet up with a friend sometime later in the week when you are free.

Yes your friends may be busy people but aren't we all? Don't we have goals, dreams and aspirations of our own that we need to work hard at achieving? We all have 24 hrs in a day so what makes your friend different from you in the amount of time he/she has? No he/she only differs in the amount of motivation he/she has in MAKING time for you. One fine day u will reach your saturation point at always being the one to put in effort in making the time; something that differs greatly from simply slotting a person into the free time he/she already as. Again I emphasise making time is a crucial component in friendships and not acquaintances. I don't care less about one not making time for me if they are just ordinary acquaintances but if such behavior comes from someone who professes to be more than that and even claims to be a good friend then naturally I expect better. Afterall I'm human too. I can only give so much before I find my patience and strength running low.

When someone is distressed, logically you would expect a friend to come forward and help but in this godforsaken world u r expected to seek your friend. Yup you can tell so and so " hey you know what it's been a rough week and i'm in such a foul mood" but if the person just sends a message "hey i hope you are feeling better" having made no attempts to lend a listening ear or be a pillar of support it doesn't strike me as being very sincere. Would you even feel like replying to such a message? I know I didn't feel like it. I just gave an exasparated sigh and went on trying to deal with things with whatever limited energy I had. It struck me that if I really meant something to a friend he/she would try to find out how I'm doing without me always initiating things. True to that there are some sweethearts who made the effort to make sure I'm doing fine. Gestures that really touched me considering that their own lives ain't going too smoothly. So if you are one of those special people thank you so much! I can't express my gratitude enough. :) Of course the downside of just giving up on initiating things is that you realise that some people are content to think that just cos you are feeling too blue to reply (and need to be seeked instead of being expected to seek); that you just don't want to talk to them. Interesting really, considering how I could have assumed the same when I found myself in a similar situ. It would have so easy to brush it all off and say "hey i think you don't want to talk to me...ok i can't care less...i'm off to do my own things" But I just couldn't find it in me to act in such an indifferent way.

I'm sick and tired of being treated like crap. I wasn't born to nurse bruised egos, fill the voids in sad lonely lives and be an all in one personal counsellor come friend. I choose to do it cos I care. And I don't mind if people don't do much for me...but a listening ear and a shoulder of support really isn't much.. We could all do with a little more love and respect. I don't think that's expecting alot...Contrary to that I think it's cos such expectations are not in place that there is always someone on the losing end in most friendships and relationships. As I said before there's a fine line betwen being selfless and being made use of by someone.

Since I'm venting I might as well bring to light a few other things that are pissing me off at the moment. I was told that I am too trusting; in a tone that implied that this was a fatal flaw that needs immediate correction. There's a difference between being gullible and being trusting; the former a flaw and the latter a strength. It takes more that meets the eye to put behind you every hurt and allow yourself to trust someone new. It takes graciousness to give every person u meet a fair chance to prove themselves. It takes courage and strength to allow someone get close to you although you know he/she might very well hurt you. Being trusting is perceived as a flaw only cos people take advantage of it. So tell me now? My fault that i'm trusting? or simply others' fault that they can't live up to my trust?

So yea bottomline of this post and a message to everyone....you are worth more than that so if someone can't accord you with the respect you deserve than tell them to shape up or pack up....period!

Of Days Gone By...

He had tears in his eyes that night when he asked her to promise him that she’ll never leave him. She was surprised. It was like being in a dream. After all she’d been in love with him for 8 long years; most of those years suffering the pains of unrequited love. She’d always known he was a flirt; the kind who thrived on the attention he got from girls. Yet, for some unexplainable reason she was attracted to him. Beneath his flaws he had a heart filled with kindness and love. This was what she believed or chose to believe in.

She wouldn’t call it love. No, that would be putting it too mildly. She’d rather call it a form of devotion. She’d always looked upon him with a curious mixture of motherly affections and love. Each time he hurt her, she chose to forgive him because she believed that with time he’d come to realize his mistakes and turn over a new leaf. She loved him without expecting anything in return. Perhaps that was also a reason why she could turn a blind eye to his every mistake. In truth, she rationalized his weakness and worshipped his strengths. He was her first love.

That eventful night, she could hardly believe what she was hearing. He’d rejected her time and again. His callous and insensitive behavior had caused her much heartache over the many years. But through it all they’d remained friends. Their friendship had grown in the last few years to resemble an abstract piece of art. Incomprehensible. Beautiful. It had brought her so much pain and so much joy. A paradox which she’d come to accept. At that moment however all pains vanished without a trace. She had nothing but sweet contentment wash over her and her heart was filled with so much love for the boy who stood in front of her.

She wiped away his tears while her own tears started streaming down her face. “I’ll never leave you. It’s a promise.” If marriage is about a union of two souls then one could say she married him in her heart in that single moment. She was determined to never let him go. She wanted to be there for him for the rest of her life.

He smiled at her. The smile that took away her breath each time she saw it. He wasn’t particularly attractive. She never saw him as a dashingly handsome individual. Yet she could never deny that he had an aura of mystery and a charisma that captivated her from the start. For her he would always be that young, enthusiastic boy she met when she was 13. She never knew when she fell in love. Neither did she know why. All she knew was that the sparkle in his eyes and that cheeky smile were two things she’d grown accustomed to and he’d become someone she treasured with all her heart.

“So no more messing up yea? We shall make this work. You truly are the best girlfriend in the world. I’m blessed to have you by my side.” He held her in his arms while he whispered those words gently into her ears. These very words she came to hear quite a number of times thereafter. Each time it felt surreal. But for that one moment she felt true bliss. And that was all that mattered to her.

Then came another night, a month down the road. Another night to remember; this time for different reasons. She never realized how badly she was hurting until then; when fear took over her. Her scars hadn’t healed. It was not something she spoke about because she knew that many would not understand. That night even the boy she loved didn’t seem to care. He seemed like a different person. Annoyed, impatient and insensitive. She wondered how someone could change so much in a course of one month but she should have known better. In the years that had passed it was a rather common phenomena; this behavior of his. He would treat her with so much love and over night without warning he’d turn cold towards her. This would follow with his “disappearing acts” that may last from days to months. In one sense his unpredictable nature was the only thing predictable about him.

She’d had thought this time round things were going to be different. He seemed so serious about her. She’d even met his parents. He couldn’t be playing with her feelings could he? He even talked about marriage and what about that night? She still remembered him asking her for her word that she will not leave him. Yet she started to see that reality at a way of turning things around for her when she least expected it. Her attempts to move on in the past; to move away from him at only caused her much grievance. It had turned her entire life around and wounded her in an unimaginable way. It was one reason why she clung onto him so fiercely. It was not only cos she loved him so deeply but also cos she needed to be loved after everything that she’d been through. So she asked him that night; asked him to promise her that he’d always be with her through it all. She’d given up her pride to ask that question. His reply was a shock to her.

“Why are you asking me such a thing?” He said it with an irritation that he was not able to mask successfully. Yet after awhile he relented and said yes. An answer that proved to be the beginning of the end. She’d always been an intuitive girl. It was one reason why people chose to confide in her. She not only listened; she truly cared. Her premonitions told her that the silence that night had brought; was the silence before a storm.

What happened after that seems like a distant memory. In fact it’s insignificant to mention the multitude of details; details of things taking a downward trajectory. She was caught in a whirlpool of confusion. It stopped her from concentrating in every other aspect of her life. The myriad of emotions she felt is probably all that she remembers. Of all the emotions she had gone through only one stays vividly in her mind.

Pain. Who would have thought that love would hurt so much? But she’d always been naïve. She trusted people too much and too easily. It was something that she knew for herself. Yet she’d believed in looking for the good in people as much as she can. She’d believed in second chances. So when love walked into her life unexpectedly and walked out in the same manner all she was left with was a sense of disbelief. She was numb, probably in denial. It was only after many weeks that she let down her defense and let herself grieve for her loss. Even now the memory haunts her.

She was waiting anxiously to hear from him. It had been three weeks since they last talked. She was told that he needed some time off. He needed to concentrate on his exams. She had given in to him. No matter what issues they were facing his studies were a priority to her and she didn’t want to be a hindrance to his goals. So she struggled with the pain and confusion. She struggled to keep her fears to herself. She tried to put a stop to her tears. It was a miracle she got through her own papers. She wrote them all in a daze.

December 5…She had no idea what that day held in store for her. She woke up early and went onto her messenger to see if he was online. He was. Her heart skipped a beat. She pondered on whether she should break the silence. He had only ended his exams the night before. Perhaps he needed time to consolidate his thoughts? She on the other hand at thought through it all. She had decided that she would try and make things work. Try even harder than before. The hols seemed like a good time to iron things out between them. She was full of optimism. In fact she was in a cheerful mood that morning.

Then it caught her eye. She had received one new email. She saw that it was from him. Even then she didn’t realize the significance of it. She was simply puzzled. A single click and things changed forever. She sat there reading the words in front of her in half horror and half fascination. No, this couldn’t be. There must be a mistake. We were meant to be together forever. A breakup? Was he joking? Time stood still. Nothing made sense.

Reality is harsh. The very person who had told her that if she ever left, his life would be meaningless; that losing her would be the biggest regret in his life was telling her that he needed her no longer. He was ending it all over an email. An email that had a miserly paragraph written on it. It was as if he was in a great hurry to end things soon as possible. She could feel neither sadness nor a sense of loss in those words. It was only plain relief that she could feel. She realized he’d even taken off pictures of her/them from his website. She had been admiring these pictures only the night before.

Words failed her then as it fail her now. What was it that he said again? Oh yes, “it has been a memorable 6 months that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life”. “I’m neither going to blame you nor myself”. “It’s sad that things turned out this way.” “You are a great girl and I’m letting you go so that someone else can take better care of you”. So magnanimous or so she let herself think for awhile. But they were all lies. He had fallen in love with someone else. She wished he had just told her so and ended things before they had gotten so complicated. It’s not that she wouldn’t have been hurt but at least she would have had not felt cheated. Now she’s left with memories so painful. They’re painful because she no longer can believe what they shared was truly love. She had loved him for who he was. He had loved her for what she was…a prized trophy. A possession he never failed to show off and take pride in. It was almost like she had been an object of the latest trend/fad.

It doesn’t matter now. To some extent she’s numb to the pain. For the most part however, the fear of being abandoned; runs so deep within her. People think she’s cold, arrogant and icy. Truth is she doesn’t allow herself to get too close to new people who cross her path. She knows herself; that she’d become too attached and affectionate. It’s always been the case. She would shower love like she’s never been hurt before. She would treat them right; putting their interests before hers. Everything would be smooth sailing. For awhile at least. Yet the people she chooses to love with all her heart, have a way of leaving her and abruptly at that. She’s used to finding herself losing a friendship/relationship overnight.

She had never understood why. It isn’t even the case of a relationship suffering a gradual death. It’s the abruptness of it all that hurts her the most. The cold demeanor, the change in attitude, the unfriendliness often paves way to broken promises. She often finds herself apologizing, trying to make amends when it’s no fault of hers. At least she doesn’t realize what mistakes she made. She’d given up asking why a long time back cos she never seems to get the answers. It’s like bargaining with the devil, pleading with a wall. After some time she realized that she was conversing with only herself.

She never thought she was going to let herself down that path again but she has. She didn’t want things to turn out this way but they have. Once again she finds herself at a crossroad. Confusion, fears and tears have all taken over her. Yet she has to continue with her façade of happiness. The joy she radiates outside and the hurt that’s gnawing her from the inside is sapping every ounce of energy she has.

If things weren’t bad enough she screws up in aspects of her life that she’s always tried hard to excel in. It seems to her at this moment that she is nothing but a failure. She can’t seem to do anything right and every time she feels a new beginning awaits her, the end comes shortly after. She’s tired of it all. Tired of looking out for others, of trying to do what’s right, of being too straightforward and honest and most of all of being so naïve and idealistic.

It’s time she abandons hope; hope that always seem to abandon her. Solitude awaits her with open arms and this time she’s too tired to resist. If this is the way things are going to end then so be it. She neither wants to ask why nor does she want to alter the course of events. She doesn’t have the strength. Her self esteem has already taken a plunge for the worse; and a long time back at that. If she hears, “you are so boring”, “I can’t seem to converse with you”, “quit being childish and act your age”, “you are too dreamy”, “you are too nice, it makes me uncomfortable”, or the worst of it all “cos you deserve better” she might just lose her mind. Her mind is already delicate at this moment; a precarious moment where she clings on to her sanity by a bare thread.

Suddenly, she feels all alone in a world that makes little sense to her. Maybe it’s better that way. After all how many times can you open your hearts to others only for them to trample over you as they please?

Confusion.
Silence.
Tears.
Hurt.
Fear.
Help?

Lost

Deja vu...This moment seems all too familliar...You might think it makes it easier...But it doesn't...It hurts more than the last time...Or is that just a figment of my imagination?..I can faintly feel the tightness around my chest, the breathlessness...Yet I don't feel it too..My head feels light and my heart heavy...

The darkness i've kept away from engulfs me in a tight embrace...A reunion of friends who've not seen each other for awhile...Misery loves me more than I thought it to...Maybe I should be flattered?...That at least there's one ardent admirer of mine that's here to stay...A friend who goes a long way back with me...One who's been there through the years...

An unusual friend to say the least...He hates my smile he says...Apparently the warm rosy look of joy just doesn't flatter me..He's smiling now though...I can see that cheshire grin of his...He likes my tears, likes seeing them falling down my cheeks slowly at first and then faster till they merge together to form a continuous stream...It's been long I hear him say...Long since he's seen me this way...He chides me for having the audacity to think my fortune's have changed for the better...He says I'm not good enough for any other...It's true my fren...Looks like you have all my love to yourself...Well now off you go...No worries; the smile's not going to come back anytime soon...and even if it does why worry?...It won't last remember?

God if you are listening...What is it that you want from me? Why play these mindgames? You give me so much to hope for...It almost seems like miracles are just around the corner..And when I finally find it within me to believe that this time round it's going to happen for real; you take it all away...Sometimes you make me feel like I have everything a girl wants...And within moments you make me feel like I'm nothing at all...There are moments I've let myself believe I'm special only to end up feeling I'm deceiving myself...I'm tired of playing these games god...You wouldn't believe how tired if I told you...But then again you know everything and you should know best...I don't know why you are testing me so much..You probably have your plans...But please have some mercy on me...It's getting to be overwhelming...

Hmm...it's the same feeling alright...the feeling of entrapment...walls closing in on me...the feeling of falling down a bottomless pit...the feeling of a futile unending struggle...I wasn't kidding when I said it's deja vu...I find myself to lose myself once more...
